Detailed property description:

Résidence Les Barrats is located around five minutes` walk from Place Balmat - the town square - and two minutes from the shops and facilities of Chamonix Sud, which is also the location of the main bus stop. It`s centrally located in a quiet, tree lined-setting.

Refurbished to a very high standard, it comprises a double bedroom, a twin bedroom (which can convert to a double), a separate bathroom and a WC. The open plan lounge/dining room has a modern, stylish kitchen and two balconies (one with evening sun and views of Mont Blanc). It has parking and ski/bike cellar, wifi and sound system.

Area description:

Chamonix is a town where charm and tradition share the scene with modern resort facilities. The architectural heritage has been preserved, giving a unique atmosphere to the resort. Traditional village hamlets are located up and down the 23 km Chamonix valley.

Chamonix is truly an all year round resort, where you`ll find many of the 100 shops open `out of season`. During the winter it is famed for its diverse skiing, particularly off-piste (e.g. Vallee Blance), with 90% of its three resorts being above 2,000 metres. While in the summer extreme sport enthusiasts turn their attention to mountain biking and mountaineering, given that Mont- Blanc is the highest mountain in Europe at 4,810 m.

For those of us who like to have a more leisurely holiday, there are plenty of gentler options associated with a town of 10,000 inhabitants, such as museums, water fall walks etc. In fact, Chamonix is one of the most multicultural towns in French with students from around 40 countries at the last count. As a consequence, if you tier of the local Savoyard food it`s easy to find Italian, Indian, Chinese, Swedish, and English food among the 100 or so restaurants and bars. Saying that, you are never in any doubt that you are in France when you are there.

Entertainment and events are in abundance in Chamonix and the surrounding areas. These range from science festivals to international sporting events, musical forays to photo competitions. So be sure to keep an eye out for the tourist information

In general, the flat is satisfactory. There are a few points to criticise, however, which could be improved with minor effort:1.) The flat had a somewhat muggy smell, which did not disappear when opening the windows. This is probably due to the large carpet in the living room.2.) the bathroom has no fan (and no window), so that it gets very moistly when used for showering by several persons one after another.3.) The advertised refurbishment stopped exactly at the entrance door: The old lock was quite difficult to open or close with the key.4.) I didn`t manage to use the WLAN. (However, it was possible to have internet access with a network cable, therefor the WLAN router seems to have a configuration problem.)5.) one of the beds was not prepared as arranged with the local administrator6.) Old objects were present in the freezing compartment of the fridge.

Landlord reply: Thanks for your comments, we`ll certainly take them on board. We`ve had many very happy guests and no-one has mentioned a musty smell before, but unfortunately new wool rugs sometimes have a distinct smell which aren`t to everyones taste. However, we are assured this will dissipate quickly. We would have loved to have replaced the entrance door and installed a bathroom fan when refurbishing, but the management company forbid this. We find the the modern top lock is the best for day-to-day use.Our "in-resort team" are on hand at all times to offer advice and rectify problems, but unfortunately no request was made during the stay for help with the Wifi which works perfectly. The food in the freezer was an over sight which will be checked next time. Thank you for your advice.

Note that there is a wonderful sound system in the house, so if you don`t speak French and have some movies to watch, you can do that (there are also some quite nice ones in the collection). Don`t bring your own utensils, it is all over there!However, you will need your soap, shampoo and shower gel stuff.
